Struggling to select the best toothbrush for receding gums?

There’s a vast array of toothbrushes out there. Each manufacturer claims they are the solution to be gentle on gum recession and help with the sensitivity associated with it.

And some toothbrushes for receding gums don’t come cheap.

For that reason, it’s important to ensure you’re buying the right toothbrush for both your gum health and your pocket. Luckily for you, I deal with receding gums on a day to day basis, and here are the two brushes I recommend to my patients, day in, day out.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the two best toothbrushes for receding gums. One manual and one electric. Let’s keep it simple.

Oral B Pro 2 2500  review- best electric toothbrush for receding gums

MANUFACTURERS CLAIM TO FAME

The Oral B Pro 2 toothbrush.

Not the fanciest nor the priciest toothbrush for receding gums, but easily my favourite electric for receding gums, if not full stop.

The Oral B Pro 2 has 3D technology, meaning the round head rotates, pulsates and oscillates as it cleans. More movement = more plaque removal.

It has 2 settings – A daily clean.

And importantly – a sensitive clean.

HOW THE ORAL B PRO 2 2500 TOOTHBRUSH WORKS

Oral B, the best selling toothbrushes in the country.

Always a solid choice and this one particular is at a fantastic price point for what it brings to the table.

It’s easy to use, stylish, waterproof, comes with a handy travel case and has an impressive has 2-week battery life.

The brush will even break your 2-minute brush into 30-second segments, each highlighted with a slight change in the motor. This way you know you’re spending enough time in each quadrant.

But the important part- what makes this the best toothbrush for receding gums?

It’s the built-in pressure sensor.

If you push too hard when you brush, a red light will appear on the neck of the brush to indicate you could be damaging your teeth and causing gum recession.  What’s more, it’ll turn itself down as a protective mechanism.

It’s like a shower which gets too hot, you’ll automatically jump out of the water. Your brush is giving the same protective response so you don’t have to think about it.

ISSUES WITH THE ORAL B PRO 2 TOOTHBRUSH FOR RECEDING GUMS

Honestly, there aren’t many.

Forget fancy features and gimmicky extras, this toothbrush does exactly what it needs to do for receding gums.

MY PROFESSIONAL OPINION

Yes, there are plenty of more expensive toothbrushes out, packed with plenty more features and at higher price points.

But for just £35, if you’re looking for the best toothbrush for receding gums, then look no further than this.

The brush comes with standard Cross Action toothbrush heads. For complete protection, I’d recommend buying Oral B Sensi Ultra-Thin brush heads. These are even more gentle on gums, but still tough on plaque.

The golden combination of the Oral B Pro 2 pressure sensor and the Sensi Ultra-Thin bristles means real protection with your toothbrush for receding gums.

Curaprox CS 5460  review- best manual toothbrush for receding gums

best toothbrush for receding gums - manual curaprox brush

MANUFACTURERS CLAIM TO FAME

Swiss-made, you know you’re getting quality when you pick up a Curaprox toothbrush.

These brushes are not just soft, they’re ultra-soft.

And the secret’s out. Brushing your teeth is now pure joy when you pick of these up. Bright, light and fun, the Curaprox toothbrushes come in an array of happy colours, ensuring you have a great start to the day.

And you’ll never worry about confusing it with your partners.

Eeeeeew.

HOW CURAPROX TOOTHBRUSHES WORK

It’s easy to understand how ultra-soft bristles make the toothbrush for receding gums, but how on earth will it clean your teeth?

The secret is in the bristles.

Sorry, Curaprox. Not bristles.

The secret is in the filaments.

They’re effective two-fold.

Firstly, the toothbrush filaments unbelievably fine, each one only 0.1mm and made of Curen®, not the traditional nylon on normal toothbrushes. This makes them soft, like touching under a babies chin.

Secondly, there are so many of them! No prizes for guessing, 5460 filaments in fact. Compare that to a meagre 2500 bristles for your usual manual brush.

The combination of ultra-soft densely packed filaments makes the manual Curparox the best toothbrush for receding gums, by far.

And they’re a bargain off Amazon.

ISSUES WITH CURAPROX TOOTHBRUSHES

curaprox worn brush

The main issue with the Curaprox brush, like any other manual toothbrush is it’s still technique dependant. You could have a toothbrush head the size of the moon, but if you’re not using it correctly then you won’t remove the plaque from your teeth.

You must brush your teeth systematically, and brush every surface of every tooth if you want a proper clean. The toothbrush must be angled 45° into your gum line to clean this area, the most important if you have receding gums.

Secondly, because the brush is ultra-soft, it can wear out ultra quickly.  If you normally change your toothbrush over 3-4 months, you’ll probably change this every 2-3 months.

MY PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

This is the best toothbrush for receding gums out there… if you’re certain you know you’re brushing your teeth properly.

If your hygienist shows plaque around your gumline every 6 months (virtual hand slap…naughty), then a manual toothbrush of any sort is probably not right for you.

But the real beauty of this brush, it doesn’t matter if you’re a 6 foot 6 bodybuilder with biceps that could crush an apple, there is no way you’re going to cause further recession to your gums.

And importantly when choosing the best toothbrush for receding gums…

There are many causes of gum recession. Although selecting the best toothbrush for receding gums helps prevent it further, it’s also important to know why your gums have receded.

You must go to your dentist to find the cause and seek their professional advice.

Even the best toothbrush for receding gums only works in combination with professional treatment from your dentist.
